Scotland has just opened its first large-scale tidal energy farm that will supply electricity to 175,000 homes. The farm can be found in the waters off the north coast.
This huge undertaking weighs over 200 tons and is almost 50 feet tall. A single turbine will produce 1.5 megawatts of power. When completed, 269 behemoths will harness power from the waves and produce almost 400 megawatts of power.
The energy farm will only reach full capacity in 2020. The costs for this innovative project has been enormous, the first four turbines cost $30 million, suggesting the overall cost would be over $2 billion. Not a small amount in any country.
Scotland is perfectly situated for the harnessing of clean energy as it lies in an area that is ideal for utilizing wind and tidal power.
We hope that this initiative by Scotland will motivate more countries to harness natural energy.
